Synopsis

The Banks family live in a beautiful big house in London. Nanny after nanny is driven to her wit's end by Jane and Michael, much to the dismay of the children's parents. Unfortunately, with Mr Banks spending all his time working at the bank and his wife mostly tied up with the feminist struggle, no one seems to care enough to find a suitable nanny for the kids. So the two rascals decide to write their own advertisement to hire the ideal person. Their father thinks their expectations are extremely fanciful but that is not the case with everyone ... The ad has barely been published when Mary Poppins arrives from the skies, carried by her umbrella to their door. She knocks and declares herself ready to take up the job. She introduces Jane and Michael to magic that is all around them, so long as they are willing to see it ...

Benshi's review

It took Walt Disney a little over 20 years to gain the screen rights for Mary Poppins. His perseverence paid off because this feature film is one of the most memorable and ambitious in Disney history. The film is a veritable hymn to childhood and made a positive impression on several generations of kids and will no doubt continue to do so. The film owes its strength to the array of colourful characters who charm us from the opening minutes, such as Bert the one-man-band, chimney sweep and artist; Admiral Boom who treats his house like a ship; and, of course, Mary Poppins. She sort of represents the perfect parents: strict and authoritarian when necessary but always fair and, most importantly of all, always present and attentive. She become the quiet mediator between Mr and Mrs Banks and their children, the link between the adult world and childhood. The parent-child relationship is at the heart of a film that criticises the cold and austere traditional method of education. While George Banks is obsessed with his place in society and having a successful career, his wife Winifred devotes her time to her fellow suffragettes and the fight for women's right to vote. The film reminds us that we should enjoy our children while they are young and try to inspire affection in them. Beyond family relationships, the film carries a message of warmth and generosity to others while criticising the capitalist system. Mary Poppins, let us not forget, is also a musical comedy that abounds with energy! The adventures of Mary, Jane and Michael are interspersed with songs and boisterous dance routines across the rooftops of London, in the middle of the street or in an imaginary countryside where penguins wear bow ties. The film's technical prowess is evident not only in the special effects but in the blend of continuous shooting and animation in the form of cartoons. The interaction between actors and animated characters works marvellously and has the effect of lifting us into a kind of fairytale whirlwind. Everything in Mary Poppins serves to stimulate the imagination and encourage creativity to make everyday life sweeter. If we had to summarise the film in one sentence, we could quote from one of Bert's songs: "Oh it's a jolly holiday with Mary, Mary makes your heart so light. " A classic that can be watched again and again!
