Synopsis

Paris, 1910. A terrifying creature spreads panic across the capital of France. Emile, a shy projectionist, and Raoul, an exuberant inventor, find themselves catapulted into the hunt for the Monster. In the course of their mayhemic journey they encounter a warm-hearted cabaret singer, an eccentric professor assisted by a monkey, and an inspector with very big teeth. And they find out that a strange creature may not be as frightening as first thought. What if, behind deceptive appearences, the real Monster was not the one suspected?

What a thrill! A Monster in Paris is a tender story set in central Paris, the city of love, of cinema and of mysteries! Right from the film's opening we are whisked into the heart of a cinema and the city as it endures its biggest ever flood. We meet Emile, a shy projectionist who is in love with the beautiful Maud, a box officer cashier who wears big glasses. Along with his associate Raoul, a genuine charmer and smooth-talking inventor, the characters take us through stoned alley ways on a very peculiar mission. We find ourselves immersed in a mysterious layer... Emile is adorable with his shyness and awkwardness, and Raoul entertains us with his bravado. He loves acting like a great inventor and is quick to deploy his typically Parisian charm. Emile, as a real cinema lover, always has his camera with him and films everything, even the event that is going to change the course of history... Yes, we witness the birth of Paris's famous monster! Like our heroes, we are flabbergasted by its sheer size and, above all, by the strange silhouette that runs off, seemingly more scared than us... The famous Paris monster is a lonely outcast who finds refuge and care with a beautiful singer named Lucille, who even gives him a name: Francœur. Together they make an unlikely yet authentic pair, like Beauty and the Beast. The film follows in the lineage of Victor Hugo's Quasimodo and the Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (published in 1910, the same year in which this film is set). While our dear Francœur finds succour in the cabaret of the lovely Lucille, the plot continues along three strands: there is the hunt for the monster, which serves the political interests of Maynott, the smug police commissioner; the love between the main characters; and, most of all, the mystery of the giant masked musician who enchants audiences with his divine voice and his novel music... This film is both a musical comedy and a romantic fantasy, as well as a tribute to tolerance that demonstrates the extent to which creatures are monstrous for how they behave, not how they look...
